ENGINEERING GUIDE / CUTTING & GRINDING

How to Match a Disc to an Angle Grinder

Match the operation first, then the workpiece material and the machine interface. Confirm diameter, bore or mounting system, speed rating and guard requirements together. A disc that physically fits is not automatically suitable for the task.

Separate cutting from grinding

Cutting removes material along a cut; grinding removes material from a surface. Choose an accessory expressly intended for that operation. Do not use a cutting-only wheel for side grinding. Combination wheels must be used only within the operations and conditions stated by their manufacturer.

Tell the supplier whether the job is cutting tile, cutting metal, dressing an edge, removing material or finishing a surface. “Grinding disc” is too broad to define a reliable order.

Check the machine and disc together

CheckPurchase requirement
Operation and materialManufacturer-stated application matches the task.
DiameterWithin the grinder and guard specification.
Bore / mountingMatches the approved spindle, flanges or mounting system.
Maximum speedWheel rating supports the grinder’s operating speed.
Guard and instructionsCorrect guard and mounting procedure for the operation.

Do not choose from diameter alone

The GEAKITA cutting-disc range contains several diameter and bore combinations. Record the complete dimensions, not only a name such as “110 mm blade”. Different products with similar diameters can have different thicknesses, center holes and intended uses.

For a diamond accessory, ask for the intended workpiece and whether the specific product is approved for the proposed wet or dry process. Do not infer these conditions from the word “diamond” alone. Check that the machine itself is suitable for the proposed process.

Make the acceptance test specific

Provide the actual workpiece material, thickness and desired finish. Agree what will be measured: cut quality, edge condition, material removal or another relevant result. Keep the machine and operating conditions consistent when comparing samples. Avoid an unsupported “longer life” claim without a comparable test.

Inspect accessories and follow the grinder and accessory instructions before use. Norton’s references below explain why cutting-only wheels must not be side-loaded and why maximum wheel speed must not be exceeded.
